Hands-on Geometry Learning and Cell Phone Free Classroom

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our school this year we want to help teach and promote responsible and appropriate digital citizenship. Our school staff has overwhelmingly agreed that a consistent policy to bar cell-phone use during class will help students stay more present and engaged in their learning, will promote peer-to-peer interactions, and will act as a mental health break from social media and other challenges facing our modern students. The intent is to support them in their academic success, remove a major temptation and distraction, and promote social interaction and connection within our school community.
Research has repeatedly shown the negative effects of cell phone use on academic performance, focus, and mental health.
Studies tell us that it can take the brain up to twenty minutes to re-engage after checking a cell phone notification. Phone use is not just a distraction for the user, but for classmates and teachers as well. Students that we interviewed during this process confirmed that they feel the negative effects of their own and others’ cell phone use during the school day.
With this project I intend to achieve a cell phone free environment and a hands-on approach to teaching geometry with a locking cell phone storage box along with portable and mini whiteboards and 3D shapes. My project for portable white boards has already been funded which inspired me to go even further and improve my classroom setting.
