My students need an assortment of different sized and colored origami paper to explore geometric properties of angles, lines, polygons, perimeter, area, similarity, congruence and symmetry.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school math - Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2 - at an alternative public charter school. My students range from 9th through 12th grade. My school serves a high-risk student population. Nearly all our students have dropped out of school at least once due to personal circumstances. They are back for another chance to complete a high school diploma. Our school has an above-average number of special education students, students in poverty, and English language learners.
My students come from a range of backgrounds. One thing they have in common is that traditional schooling did not serve them well. They need teaching that does not expect them to sit and listen passively as an adult lectures. They need experiences that will involve them, like the hands-on work and explorations that geometric origami can provide. Our district cannot purchase these materials because generally a charter school's resources are limited, and moreover the economy is poor and fundraising is difficult.
My students and I request funding for origami paper of various sizes and colors to explore a broad range of geometric concepts. We have already completed an origami project (the 'Octagon Star') and the students want to do more. By obtaining more origami paper with different sizes and styles, we will be able to continue our exploration of geometric concepts and add some we haven't yet had the chance to examine, such as how area and volume change when a figure is scaled to a different size.
Your generosity will give my students an opportunity to relate to mathematics in a meaningful and memorable way - much more effective than lectures and worksheets! Furthermore, you will enable our students to take one closer step to completing their high school diploma requirements.
More than half of students from low‑income households
