My Students
Our classroom is an open and inviting environment designed to foster independent student learning. My students are thirsty for new materials to continue their education.
I teach in a public urban multi-age Montessori school with forty-five first through fourth-grade students.
My students learn through small group and individual lessons, research and inquiry, and by going out into our community. My students come from all different backgrounds racially and socioeconomically and live in an urban setting. My co-teacher and I are piloting a combined Montessori 1st-6th grade classroom.
My students are involved in social justice and environmental conscious movements taking a stand and trying to better the world. Our students work hard with the resources they have to follow their passions and find meaning in their education.
My Project
In our Montessori Classroom, children use materials from all different curricular areas in our classroom to have authentic experiences.
These geography materials provide hands on experiences that not only display distinct social studies concepts, but also increase hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, independence, and concentration.
Each continent has four maps that come with the set. One map has all the country names, another the capital cities, another the flags, and lastly a pin map. Students then use these guiding maps to place corresponding pins for each map. This helps students to isolate their task and test their own skills without the help of an adult.
The land and water form trays are used to teach pairs of geographic terms: isthmus and strait, archipelago and chain of lakes, and more. Students are able to see the negative and positive space, and fill trays with water.
We greatly appreciate your support bringing pin maps and land and water form trays into our classroom!
