Hands-On Genetics Help My Students Grow Into Scientists
My students need a genetic inheritance kit to help them predict outcomes of genetic events. Additionally, they need "The Blueprint of Life" DVD and the inspiration of the Henrietta Lacks story.
Imagine trying to learn about 21st century technology while working with early 20th century facilities. It does not provide the best atmosphere for my biology students. My school is in an urban high needs district and does not have adequate resources for my students that dream of going to college.
My students are wonderful, creative people that despite their situation have a positive attitude in life.
The majority live in poverty and qualify for free lunches. They do not have background and exposure to best serve them when taking the NYS Regents exams. For the last two years, I was able to provide them with a science enrichment day at Cornell University. It was amazing to see my students working in world class laboratories. They loved it and I believe it inspired some to pursue their interest in science. However without the technology and supplies in my classroom, I fear that I cannot give them the best opportunities.
My Project
I am requesting genetic inheritance kit to help them predict outcomes of genetic events. Additionally, they need The Blueprint of Life DVD and the inspiration of the Henrietta Lacks story.
With the resources provided in this kit, my students will be able to understand the complex manipulations of punnet squares to predict the outcome of a genetic cross. Once the basic concepts are mastered, they will use the kit to apply their skills and predict the outcome of a genetic cross. Hands on scientic inquiry is one of the best techniques for exploring and learning difficult concepts!
Understanding punnet squares begins the process of understanding genetics and inheritance of traits. As each student gains an understanding of these complex processes, they will begin to appreciate the unique combination of traits that compose their background. Moreover, students will be able to apply 21st century topics of gene splicing, cloning, gene therapies, DNA fingerprinting, and genetic engineering. The topics in today's news that will influence decisions tomorrow.
I also want them to read about Henrietta Lacks life and her contributions to scientific theory.
It is with these supplies that I plan to make a difference in my student's learning this year.
I want all my students to pass the NYS Regents and have an opportunity to pursue college.
As a parent and a teacher, I realize the impact education makes on my students. Science in particular is energizing and engages my students' imaginations. Teaching in my urban environment makes me realize that many of my students do not have the "life experiences" to make science connections. So, it is my goal to provide them.
Every day I say to myself, perhaps I am helping one student move forward to a brighter, more hopeful future. Please help me achieve this dream for my students.
