My students need the Cancer Screening and Genetics kits the refill materials to support all 43 students in my biology class.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Short's classroom raised $299

My Students
Genetics is one of the most engaging aspects in biology for students. It is one of the most important concepts in biology, and the technologies involved in genetics are also some of the fastest-growing. Students in biology 1 will be introduced to some of these technologies using these materials.
Students at my school are gifted artistically, but many of them are interested in future studies and careers in science, particularly biology.
My school has approximately 600 students in high school, and they often take biology 1 in their ninth or tenth grade years.
My Project
Genetic fingerprinting is a major application in biology. Diagnosing potential diseases so that patients can be aware of risks, treatments, and potential to pass it along to their children are all important pieces of this application. In this lab kit, students are able to simulate the genetic fingerprinting analysis that is done by genetic counselors and their technicians each day. They will actually run the DNA on gels using gel electrophoresis and diagnose the owners of the DNA with a genetic disorder passes from generation to generation. It will be a great way to introduce a complex topic to my students.
This project may help to inspire students who are undecided in their future studies to become experts in genetics.
It may solidify an already interested student on their path to a career in biology. It may also spark the interest of a student who is not always fond of science to explore its many facets by giving them a hands on experience. It is a win-win for all students and teachers involved.
