As a new fifth grade teacher in a school district with a minimal supply budget, science and technology supplies can be very costly. I work at a Title I/low income school. Research shows most of my students need extra support in school.
I have the best students in the world.
Because of this I want to give them the best! The majority of my students are living in lower economic households and many are English as a Second Language. For this reason, some of my kids find education very challenging. When I provide more hands-on, engaging experiences, my kids learn more and have fun doing so.
My Project
I want learning to be "attract" my students. By playing with a variety of different magnets, my students will learn how magnets work. The iron filings will show the different patterns that are created by the magnetic field. Also I believe it is very important that my students understand the importance of magnets in our everyday lives. This is why I am asking for compasses and an electromagnet kit. I will demonstrate how magnets and electricity work together to create some of our most common technology today. In my class we do a lot of group work because research shows that kids learn best by working with their peers. This is why we are in need of several different magnets. This will allow us to experiment in groups and talk about our observations.
I really want to make a positive impact on my students.
I strongly believe that learning should be fun. This project will show students that science can be exciting and that it is all around us. It will also allow my students who are living in a lower social economic status and who are ESL to get pass some of the cultural barriers so that they can learn. My class and I would be very grateful to receive donations for this project.
