This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in our resource room classroom involves small groups of learning disabled students coming together to practice compensatory skill development. We chant sounds, rhymes, sight words; all with the goal to develop our reading skills.
We are a resource room classroom.
Our class is composed of learning disabled students living in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in NYC. We are located in a PreK-8th grade school. Our students have individualized educational plans (IEPs) that require them to be taught using VAKT methods. VAKT stands for visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile. The dry erase board allows for us to develop visually and kinetically as we would be able to manipulate letter tiles on the magnetic board and practice reading letter sounds and sight words.
My Project
We are requesting a dry erase board (easel). While our office/classroom is large enough to house 8 desks, and a teacher's desk, it doesn't have a surface to write on where the teacher can model skills being taught. We have a chart pad holder but once the paper is used it is discarded. The dry erase board we are requesting is magnetic so our students can manipulate letter tiles to form words on the board.
We are also requesting headphones with microphones and splitter adapters. Our students need to listen to and record themselves reading. With that we are requesting adapters to be able to use them with Ipods.
This dry erase board would make a world of difference to our class.
Students love coming up to the chart pad to write but the magnetic dry erase board would allow them to manipulate letter tiles, write and erase, and fully participate as a motivated learner.
The headphones would allow students to record themselves reading and they can listen to what they sound like. As they listen they can begin to self correct and become better readers.
