My Students

Being a teacher serving students in a low socioeconomic school, I've seen firsthand the challenges my students face both in and out of the classroom. My students are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade EIP students who perform below grade level. I want to increase their learning potential by providing creative and meaningful learning experiences during the time I have with them.

My students are my heroes.

Despite their academic challenges, they come to school each day willing to give 100%. They are willing to learn and trust me to guide them to get closer to performing on grade level.

Our school is a Title I school. 98% of the students in our school are African American and come from high poverty areas. Almost all of the children in our school qualify for free lunch. We are also a center elementary school for students who are deaf.

My Project

My classroom is not a typical classroom. I service second grade, third grade, and fourth grade students by pulling them from their homeroom classes. I work with my kiddos in small groups to help them improve their literacy and mathematics skills. Because my class is not typical, I am not afforded the luxury of having a large amount of supplies and resources in the classroom for my students. The leveled stories will allow the students in my classroom to access to stories that they are able to read.

I want the lessons for my students to come alive!

With the three stories I am requesting books for, I have Hands-on Problem-Solving STEM Kits. I can captivate the interest of my struggling readers by having them build chairs, bridges, and houses after we read our stories. With the promise of hands-on challenges, their attention while reading the story will increase, which will help them to become better readers. Plus, they can act out the story using the manipulatives from the kit. As a bonus, they will gain engineering experience and geometrical understanding while building the perfect chairs, bridges, or houses.
