My Students

I use inquiry-based modeling instruction in my classroom. On a typical day my students are experimenting and working in small groups. We often use white board for discussions to help students present their lab findings, propose explanations, and ask questions.

We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland.

Many of my students are tactile learners; they love to get out of their seats and experiment. Chemistry and Physics are electives in our state so my students choose to take these classes and as a result they tend to be motivated, as most are college-bound. While our science labs are old and out of date, I strive to provide my students with meaningful lab experiences.

My Project

The electronic balance will be used in support of almost all the labs we do, in order to take quantitative measurements of mass. Students will use these to measure out chemicals for chemistry labs as well as projectiles and other objects we frequently use in physics. Students need to know how to operate a balance and understand the units of measurement as this is a basic lab tool they will need to use in college and future science careers.

The electronic balance will be used by many students for years to come to take mass measurements during labs.

It will also help update our labs and provide students with real experience using scientific tools. It was provide reliable data so that students can perform meaningful experiments and yield accurate results. These tools will allow my students to develop into the scientists that I know they can become.
