My Students
As an interventionist, my teaching motto is “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin, a dyslexic, was speaking from experience when he said this. All of the students that I work with need lots and lots of hands-on practice.
My students are in the bottom 25% academically, but have not been given an IEP.
The purpose of my job is to keep these children from being tested into special education. Sixty-six percent of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our school is a Title I school located in a very small town. Because our district is so small, and our city has little industry to collect taxes from, we do not receive much money to buy extra materials with. Despite this fact, we have proved that "where there is a will there is a way." Our elementary school has consistently received high ratings from the state.
My kindergarten students struggle with basic language skills and reading readiness skills. Phonemic awareness is a huge problem for them, as well as the 1st and 2nd grade students I work with.
My Project
I am always looking for fun, engaging, hands-on activities for my struggling learners to use. Often we must repeat the same activity 20 or more times before they master the skill. I feel worksheets are sometimes necessary. However, I would rather give my students an activity that requires them to use multiple senses in order to help them retain the skill.
With the requested games and activities, my kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students would have fun learning the skills needed to be successful readers.
My elementary school has approximately 20 students from each grade who are receiving reading interventions. Not only would the students that come to my classroom for interventions enjoy using the materials, but the other teachers would also be able to check out the materials for use in their rooms.
Every student deserves a chance to be the best he can be.
Your donation could completely change the course of my students' lives. If I cannot find a way to teach them so that they learn, they will likely be tested into special education.
Just because a child doesn't learn the same way as everyone else does not mean he is not smart. We all have different talents in life, and we all learn in different ways. Please help me help my students learn.
