I am a special education teacher of students with moderate to severe disabilities. My job is to support my students in inclusive learning environments alongside their typical grade/age appropriate peers with the support and services needed to accomplish their individual goals. In an inclusive setting, it is my responsibility to collaborate with the general education teachers to facilitate learning in math and reading literacy, social relationships, and adaptive skills resulting in increased academic success for my students. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our students are learning online in a distance learning model.
Many families do not have the resources needed for their children to benefit from at-home learning.
I want my students to be stimulated by high expectations with as many resources, materials, and access to curriculum as possible in this distance learning environment.
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will find their way to each of my families' homes. I provide my students with modifications of the general education curriculum so that they can participate alongside their typical peers. In the past, I would print these modifications and provide them to each student in the classroom. Now, I am posting online and asking that parents print the work for their child. I would like to provide each household with two reams of Quill Brand Copy Paper for printing and Easy Load Heavyweight Sheet Protectors to keep the work from getting crumpled. Additionally, being able to provide a Dry-Erase Board and Dry Erase Markers to each family will help one give cues, answer choices, and/or drawings for their child in the context of an online general education classroom that is fast-paced and distracting.
With these resources, my students will be more involved and better able to participate in the online general education activities and interactions with their classmates.
Also, I create interactive activities using Card Stock, Laminating Pouches, and Velcro Hook & Loop Fasteners so that my students can match, sort, play games, and complete puzzles with their own individualized learning binder. Finally, the Key Education Write-On/Wipe-Off Blank Puzzle Pieces Manipulative is a fun way to review counting, number words, simple addition and subtraction, as well as greater and less than in the context of an online environment.
Donations to my project will help my students with special needs stay interested and focused, more engaged in academic activities, and better able to participate with their typical peers!
