Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A pyramid, a polygon, a prism. An equation, an expression. They all sound the same to some students, especially second language learners! How can students get all of these math terms straight without the beauty of hands on learning to clarify the concepts!?

My students are part of a K-8 Dual Language School in a very inner city area.

At home, they continuously deal with struggles beyond our wildest dreams. Aside from hearing their families discuss pressing issues like their finances and safety, they fight the battle of a language barrier everyday! Still, these students come to school daily, and walk through my doors with an open mind, and ready to learn! These students are incredible! They are eager to learn, and eager to dive right in and get their brains on materials that will further them academically! My students and I worked together in September to set individualized goals, and they all work hard daily to achieve them. I couldn't be prouder of my students' desire for excellence and will do anything and everything in my power to get them there!

My Project

My students are mostly second language learners, which means on top of the challenge of learning new concepts, applying them and giving them meaning, they take on a second battle with each new vocabulary term introduced! I am requesting hands on materials that will allow my students to clearly see the parts of shapes, and how they work, the reality of measurements, and how we can use probability to predict different events. Let's make math fun, and turn it into centers and activity based learning! Right now, we struggle to get students to imagine these things based on pictures or descriptions, but when things are real, there is no question they are better understood!

If this project is funded the students will have hands on manipulatives that will help them to truly see the concepts we are learning.

Many things like geometric shapes and properties are very difficult for students to imagine. It must be seen and manipulated in order to be understood. As they say, "SEEING IS BELIEVING" but I say, "Seeing is understanding!"
