Working together, singing together, playing our recorders--these are some of the activities we do in our third grade classroom. We want to learn how to play handbells so we can harmonize together, too! We love to work together with the other third grade classroom so all the students can learn to harmonize and perform using handbells.
I teach a very sweet, caring, hardworking, creative, and excitable group of 25 third grade students in sunny Los Angeles.
Over 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast daily. Our school believes in integrating the arts into our academic lessons because we feel this taps into all the students' interests. My students speak English at school, and many speak Spanish, Tagalog, or another language at home. We are a wonderful mix of cultures, and we support each other as we grow and learn together.
My Project
I have requested handbells and a storage case so our students can learn to work together on songs. I also have requested a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card so I can buy handbell sheet music written for elementary school students. They will learn how to play America the Beautiful with this sheet music and also Carol of the Bells.
The sweet tone of the handbells will be perfect to add to our singing and recorder playing.
I will also teach my students how to compose their our own handbell songs, and we will collaborate with the other third grade class so we can all perform music in harmony using the handbells!
Each student will learn to play the handbells and learn to read music, too! My class will learn fractions as we count the beats while we play. We will learn rhythm as we practice the handbell techniques. Most of all, we will have fun, learn how to play a wonderful instrument, and grow closer as a class as we work together to perfect our songs.
Playing the handbells has become a tradition for our third graders, enabling many students over the years to develop fond memories as they learn to read music and harmonize together with our wonderful handbells!
