This project is fully funded

In the fall of 2005, I will teach music to grades K-8 in the South Side of Chicago. General music classes for grades K-5 will include a combination of creating and performing music, as well as moving and dancing to music. Rhythm and beat are 2 fundamental elements of music, and students can best learn to internalize these elements by moving to music with the beat. For this proposal, I am requesting a total of 35 hand drums (on wooden frame, 6") for student use in general music classes. Drums are available from LMI Musicians Friend for $5.99 each. The drums will be used by all students in grades K-5 as they create and compose music. Drums will be used to explore the timbre of percussion instruments, and the drums will be used as props in dancing activities. The drums will be used by over 350 students during the course of the academic year. Hand drums provide students with the opportunity to engage in creative, accessible, and rhythmic music making activities. Students can explore musical elements of timbre, meter, form, rhythm, and improvisation with these instruments.
