My students need the aquarium and terrarium habitat kits, pumps, a teacher's guide, and lights to show and understand the flow of energy throughout communities and have the joy of watching things grow.
I have a classroom of eager fifth graders from a high needs area. I teach science and math and try very hard to provide hands-on activities for them. We are a low performing school and I hope to do my part to change that with your help.
There are many reasons why the students don't "get it." One very important reason is they have no foundation on which to make an evaluation. Most of the children have not been out of this area in their lives. So when you try to explain how something is different, they have no reference. With these different habitats, they will be able to see the world from a different perspective.
The students will be able to design food web suited to that particular community. (LS.4.5.3) They will evaluate food webs under conditions of stress by changing plant and population. (LS.4.5.4) They will also investigate the role of limiting factors on the carrying capacity of an ecosystem. (LS.4.5.5) This equipment will allow students to apply knowledge of populations and ecosystems. Hopefully this knowledge will lead to the understanding of human behavior as well when it comes to decisions made about jobs, home and community. Thank you for the opportunity to help make students better.
You will make it possible for my students to observe aquatic and plant life and make informed decisions about care and maintenance of plants and animals. When a child gains respect and awareness of nature is when we will have a better human being who is considerate and kind.
