Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students have the opportunity to take on different roles(animal biologist, soil scientist, writer, artist, plant ecologist, etc.) and tap into their own style of learning in the great outdoors! I teach all subjects to grade 4 students. My class is a diverse group of races, cultures, personalities, and interests. Our school has a large English Language Learners population and is a high-need community as well. With our new science textbook adoption and the STAR testing in science for our grade 5 students, our district will be focusing more on science this year. (As they should!)

After attending several field science institutes this summer I was excited about the prospect of bringing my newfound knowledge and lessons to the classroom. What an opportunity for my students but oh, the dilemma! How can they do what field scientists do without the correct tools? My experience has shown me that students love to get outside and explore their world and what better way to motivate students than getting them away from the day-to-day four walls of a classroom and the pages of a textbook?!

Through Rapid Assessment activities my students will be collecting data in a variety of habitats by our school as well as ones we encounter on field trips throughout the school year. In order to be successful in collecting, observing, and recording our data, we need the tools in which to do it. Our new science materials do not include the tools we would need for field work. We need thermometers, a compass, binoculars, testing kits, and nets.

You will make it possible for my students to find the wonder in our world through careful observation. Students often don't experience the wonder of looking at a macroinvertebrate as it wiggles along under a hand lens or see a Great Blue Heron up close through binoculars as it sits atop a tree. Students will discover the health of a pond and the animals that depend on it for survival. My hope is that students will have a deeper appreciation for California's biodiversity and will in turn become stewards of their community's habitats and all habitats they encounter.
