My Students

How can we bring back our environment and increase habitat for life? This project will "Teach for the Planet" ways we can restore our wildlife flora and fauna in an economically plus environmental way. For my students to see the world is not just concrete and asphalt jungle.

This program seeks to provide access to an accelerated format for students ages 17 - 20 to work toward a high school diploma.

Flexible time offerings allow students to choose the schedule which fits best for their schedule: mornings, afternoons, or evenings. My students will be taking Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Science course work that has extensions to do community projects like this to apply real world application to expand learning beyond the classroom. When students make a credit that work at and with a community partner in conservation plus additional post secondary training that is career focused. Students also have the ability to apply to job shadow and even internships with our community partners. There are 15 course sessions in one year, including extended summer study.

My Project

The students will use vermiculite, rootcube, and pots peat to help establish plants. The student will be trained to "Teach for the Planet" in ways to grow flowers that are native to my region that will provide food and shelter for native pollinators such as butterflies and honey bees. With the decline of native pollinators making the news various plants species that need the pollinators are also starting to decline. This effort will also change patterns of landscaping from non-native species to more environmental habitat establishing plant life. With this project the students will also learn job skills in botany that they can apply for home and post secondary plans. With these new skills the students will be more marketable employees that can be established in their resume for post secondary activities. We have been asked to create 300 different sites to convert to this ecological and economical friendly habitat.

Last year I started to use Donor Choose for small student projects to expand learning in a more real life application.

Due to these projects 241 students gained credits which is 22% over the best year ever in our program. Through your gift of vermiculite, rootcube, and pots peat the students will do activities that make connections with real world applications. Changing students with low engagement to high with these mini activities
