This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My science classroom is always buzzing with excitement! My students get to do hands-on discoveries, use their creativity and imagination every time they come to my class. This is the way science is supposed to be... FUN!
My school is a K-5 elementary school.
Our school is about 60% free or reduced lunch, and about half are English Language Learners. I see every class in the entire school once a week for a 40 minute hands-on science lesson. Each class has approximately 30 kids. Children are naturally curious about everything. My students are extremely enthusiastic and love learning about all things science. They run up to me and ask, "What are we doing in science today??" While in class, they have so many questions about a variety of subjects. Their excitement and energy is contagious! They really want to know how everything in the world works!
My Project
These materials will be used for my K-5 Science classes. K'Nex, Structures, Magna Tiles, and Elenco Snap Circuits are the perfect tools for beginning engineers to build and create. My current resources for building are slim, at best. I want to give them more materials to explore their inner engineer and spark an interest in creating amazing structures! My focus on STEM in my classroom allows me to introduce all students to the magic and wonder of engineering at a very early age.
I love to do building centers with my students. Each center has a different material to build with. Students tend to work as a group to make a cooperative structure. These centers teach the very important 21st Century Skills of working together collaboratively, enhancing communication skills (especially with English Language Learners), and initiating both creative and critical thinking. I have seen some amazing learning happen in these centers, including social and emotional growth!
Many of my students lack the resources needed to become 21st Century Learners.
Many students in this country do not get the proper exposure to a STEM curriculum. With these donations, my students will be able to learn and practice the skills they will need to succeed in our ever changing world.
This country has a shortage of engineers. One of my curricular goals is to spark a love of building and creating. Hopefully, some of my students will grow up and become innovative engineers of the future!
