I teach phys ed to an entire school of pre-k through 5th graders. Though I am not a new teacher, this is my first year teaching gym. All of my students receive free school lunch. Most of my students do not get an adequate amount of physical activity on a daily basis. I am trying to teach my students fun exercises that they could also do on their own at home.
It is only natural to want to listen to music while exercising. If you take a look around you at the gym, or observe people running outside, you will notice that most people are plugged in while working out. When then, should it be any different for students? I have been teaching gym for about 3 weeks now, and have been using a tape adapter to connect my iPod to a boom box in order to play music for my gym classes. This system was okay... sometimes the tape wouldn't play or the tape buttons would get stuck, but then the play button on the boom box broke, leaving me with no way to play my iPod.
I have been bringing in cds, but I do not have the selection of music that I have digitally. Also, at the beginning of the year I borrowed some children's cds from colleagues and downloaded them onto my iPod, for use with my Pre-K and Kindergarten students. I have all of the material that I need, I just need a way to access it and easily play it for my students.
Children in public schools are often the last people to enjoy the advancements of modern technology. Each of my classes only visit me once a week - please help them maximize their gym time by getting motivated and feeling energized by some great music.
