I teach in an inner city Chicago high school, in a program for students who have struggled with attendance and test scores for most of their academic lives.

The community I teach in is a community of hard-working single mothers. Many of my students have little or no contact with their fathers and have been raised by the women in their families. This is especially difficult for the young men at my school because they have few positive male role models in their home lives. This has affected their actions towards women as well as their opinions of parenting and relationships. The young men I teach also tend to lag behind the girls in terms of interest in reading and reading levels. I believe that a major contributor to this problem is the fact that many of the books available to them at school are books that are geared towards girls.

In order to help "my boys" combat the issues they face every day, I am asking for books that talk about many of the "guy issues" they face on a daily basis. My hope is that through these literature circles, they will make some important discoveries about themselves and the world around them.

These literature circles will not only give my male students a forum in which to discuss the issues that plague their everyday lives, but a way to find solutions to their problems. As an added bonus, your contribution will help these young men find interest in reading again, improve their reading levels and communication skills, and give them something they can enjoy while they are in school.
