it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Why do assessments currently show boys significantly behind girls when it comes to reading achievement? I believe this has less to do with actual skill, but disengagement with text choice. Matching male readers with books that spark their interest is a challenge I embrace everyday as a librarian.
My students live in an urban, low-income, Mexican-American community in Illinois.
It is a neighborhood elementary school serving grades K-8. There is a real sense of community that reaches past their physical neighborhood and into the classrooms of the school. The dedication of the staff, students and families is apparent to any observer. Creating good readers is an inherent ingredient in achieving this success. And, high interest books are needed to nurture and create good readers. I want my students to have access to all the current, high interest books. It saddens me as a librarian to ever have to tell a student to go to the public library to find the newest, 'hot' titles. I believe my students deserve to have a selection of new and classic books to choose from. Often ignored in the past, today's publishing world has a plethora of genres and styles to entice the male reader, many of which have already been requested by the students themselves.
My Project
Adding 35 high interest books to the library ensures that they will be shared and enjoyed by many. I am confident that most of these books won't even hit the shelves because they'll be checked out as soon as they are returned.
For the realistic fiction readers there is James Patterson's comedic spin on today's youth in his Middle School series. Go time traveling with Dak and Sera in James Dashner's action packed science fiction series, The Infinity Ring. Mystery and magic are discovered in The Dark Hills Divide series by Patrick Carman. In his Skeleton Creek series, Carman has combined traditional text with technology. A middle school super-villain offers advice on how to take over the school in Vordak the Incomprehensible series by Scott Seegert.
The goal in having a variety 'boy-centered' books is that it will capture the interest of reluctant readers and foster a love of reading.
There is no greater joy in a librarian's job than when a reluctant reader excitedly talks about finishing and enjoying a book you helped them select.
Having a variety of high interest books for boys to choose from could be the catalyst that turns a reluctant reader into a lifelong reader! This kind of enthusiasm quickly spreads when there is a captivating new series to devour. This contagious love for reading just might be a beginning step to closing the gender gap in reading achievement.
