My students are middle school international refugees that are learning English in a mid-western, urban public school district.
Many of my students have come to the United States under extreme circumstances. I have a student in my class who used to be a child soldier in Liberia. He was unschooled when he came to the United States. He has recovered from guns and drugs and is seeking to regain his childhood. Non-native English speakers benefit greatly from hearing literature read aloud while they follow along in the book. When students read audio books, they hear the language modeled properly in appropriate cultural context. This practice makes their comprehension and reading rate go up.
My students need a variety of young adult literature read aloud. Self-selecting novels based on individual interest helps students buy-in to reading.
You will help my students become proficient English language speakers quickly! It usually takes 6-8 years to totally learn another language. We speed this process up dramatically when students become immersed in the target culture through written and oral language.
