My students need guitar parts and hand tools to transform cigar boxes and other found objects into music using their knowledge of sound, light and water waves.

My Students
Imagination and resourcefulness are at the heart of building guitars and making music. Every other day, the 6th graders in our design class are eager to test the limits of their scientific understanding by applying it to everyday challenges. As we read, we can understand unfamiliar words and concepts once we've experimented and held them in our hands together. We make the most of what we have and use our imaginations to figure out what we can use to reach our goals. The music students make are as unique as each person.
My Project
A combination of timeless guitar tuning machines combined with ingenuity and resourcefulness are combined to make each one's guitar a unique tool for making music. The sound boxes are made from old wooden boxes and neck of the guitar has a removable paint stick with old brads glued to it to make frets. Old nuts and bolts are glued to guide the strings. The materials make difference in the quality of the sound produced. The nylon strings will be easier on the fingers for longer practice sessions.
The hand tools include: Japanese pull saws and clamps, which will provide precision and safety during construction in the classroom.
With the electric guitar jacks and amplifiers, they can listen to their music anywhere using a battery to bring the volume to the party or listen on headphones to practice. This is our second time with this class and last time we had to borrow the tools and the cost for the parts for each person's guitar were donated.
