This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school general music classroom is a place of creativity, sharing, and learning. In general music class, students develop foundation skills by performing on instruments, analyzing music, creating music with music technology, and deciphering music notation.

The students attend a metropolitan middle school in a large city in the Midwest.

Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low-income. My students are ambitious learners, excited to learn about the world around them, and eager to learn how to play musical instruments.

My Project

All 1000 students at the middle school I teach at have music every year. In music class students play the guitar, ukulele, and percussion music from Africa and the Caribbean. When students play the guitar they play rock, folk, and pop music. They use acoustic and electric guitars, and some students also play keyboards and drums in the ensemble. Students will learn about the history and theory of the music being performed.

The guitar strings are necessary because guitar strings break, and over time the strings become worn out and need to be replaced. With 1000 students in the music program we go through many guitar picks in a year, your donation of guitar picks will provide all students with guitar picks to play music throughout the year!
