Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 12 eager to learn Learning Disabled Special Education 5th and 6th graders, that are considered to be at the lowest achieving reading levels, according to reading and math assessment data and teacher observations. Our school is a Public Charter school, located in a high poverty area of Washington, DC.

Reading proficiency is the most important prediction of high school graduation and career success.

It is said that by the end of second and third grade students should go from learning to read, to reading to learn, to master the more complex subject matters of proceeding grade levels.

My Project

Guided Reading sessions involve a teacher and a small group, ideally of two to four children. While guided reading takes place with one group of children, the remaining children are engaged in quality independent or group literacy tasks, with the aim of allowing the teacher to focus the small group without interruption.

The requested guided reading books allows children to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress.

The children are typically grouped by academic ability, reading levels, or strategic/skill-based needs. Some students will work on very basic reading skills such as word analysis and comprehending simple texts" while other students may be working on more advanced reading skills and strategies with increasingly challenging texts.
