This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students want to learn and be the best that they can, yet, they live in a neighborhood where the resources at hand do not match the level of their curiosity. These students live in the South Bronx in New York. They are little scientists who want to know everything!
My students show their curiosity by the number of questions they ask each day.
They look for answers to these questions in the books they read.
Unfortunately, many of my students are reading below grade level. This means they cannot access the books that have all the answers to their questions.
My Project
Guided reading is a best practice in teaching. It is proven to improve children's reading levels the fastest. 2/3 of the students in this 2nd grade classroom are reading at a below-grade level.
Learning how to read better will help students answer all their curious questions and engage in critical thinking.
This lesson type is small group and having a designated space to teach these groups is key. The "kidney table" and stools provides a perfect environment for teachers to coach students as they develop their reading skills and strategies.
The interactive reading centers will keep the whole class engaged while the teacher is working with small groups.
