My Students
Remember learning to read? It can be hard and scary, but so much fun at the same time! For many of our students kindergarten is the first time they enter school. Having a small reading table that is teacher centered will allow the students to feel safe and comfortable reading with their teachers.
Kindergarten is the first time many of our students are entering school for the first time.
It can be scary for them but exciting for us and we want them to feel empowered and safe when entering our doors. We want to create an environment that allows them to want to learn more and want to read. Our school is a Title I school, many of our students don't get read to at home, not because they don't want to but because they can't. School is a place where we immerse them in literature and hope they get to love reading just as much as we do.
My Project
This small reading table will allow for our classroom to participate in small group reading or guided reading. It will allow for one of the teachers to pull a small group of students and concentrate on them. The table allows for the teacher to sit in the middle and the students to sit around. This lets the students feel comfortable looking at the teacher, and the teacher is able to monitor each student easily.
Guided reading is the key to improving reading levels.
Being able to go to a separate area in the room will allow for the students to concentrate and have a sense of empowerment that they get to read with the teacher. It can instill a love of learning, not a fear of not being able to read. It will allow for a safe place for the students to talk to and interact with one another as well as the teacher in a small group. They will have a sense of pride knowing they get to read at the special table.
