Guided Reading Time Develops Lifelong Readers

Help me give my students the essential materials needed to make guided reading fun and enjoyable for them. In addition, setting the sand timer themselves will make them more accountable for their work and time at each station.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love coming to school each day and seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of my students. School is not easy for them, yet as soon as they enter our classroom, they are eager for the day to begin. They know there are expectations to be met, schedules to follow, and lessons to be learned. In addition, they know they will be fed, cared for, and be held accountable for their choices.

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." —Victor Hugo

This is the second year we are open as a Charter School. As of now, we are a K-3 school, and will be building onto our school each year. Our student population come from homes that are below the poverty line, where 90% of the families are economically disadvantaged. The majority of our students come from homes where the only language spoken by their parents is Spanish.

My Project

Ultimately, I want to see my students pick up a book and let it transform them to a different place and time. Before that can happen though, they need to become proficient readers. Many of my students have come to me at a low reading level. My Guided Reading time is so important, and I want them to look forward to being called to meet with me.

The materials I have chosen are so that they can have fun while learning.

Good readers are like detectives, so the magnifying glasses will help them find the evidence to support their thinking. The fingers and eyes will allow them to track the words as they read, so that I can see where each of them are. I have asked for the reading trackers as well. This will allow those students that become overwhelmed with the amount of words on a page, to just focus on the specific line.

While I am meeting with a group, the other students will be actively engaged in other work. The fluency passages will help them become accountable with keeping track of their progress, while reading daily a short passage on their level. As each week progresses, they can see how they are improving, or if not, what we may need to focus our word work on. Which leads to the magnetic letters. They can use this to work on sight words, vocabulary words, or spelling words, in a way where they can touch the letter, move them around, and then write them.
