Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Education experts today emphasize the importance of bringing the students closer to the teacher and working with small groups and how this is the essential key to student academic progress.

I teach two academically diverse classes of 5th graders in a Title I school where about 95% of students receive free or reduced lunch on a daily basis.

My students come from a low-income community and are on a variety of educational levels. Some students are reading on grade level while others are reading on as many as three or four grade levels below. These 5th graders are eager to learn but are sometimes discouraged by their educational deficiencies.

My Project

Close your eyes and imagine an enthusiastic teacher sitting at a U-shaped table surrounded by a group of five or six students eagerly participating in a novel study lesson on Roald Dahl. Small group instruction is an essential daily part of our classroom routine. Unfortunately, we are missing the fundamental table to make learning more comfortable. The students would greatly benefit from having a teacher-led kidney table that allows for them to cozily sit around the teacher and receive more personalized instruction geared towards their individual needs. Having this table will allow us the close proximity to work on an endless possibility of reading and writing lessons.

As a teacher, my end goal is always to see my students making progress and feeling proud of themselves.

The kidney-shaped teacher-led table will allow for us to sit comfortably together and explore topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, Greek mythology, and many other never-ending possibilities that will lead to their academic progress.
