This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I aim to help my students own the skills and confidence to realize their dreams.
I want them to dream big. The elementary school I work in has about 400 students, most of whom come from low income families of various backgrounds.
I teach in a Spanish bilingual classroom where more than 90% of students are English Language Learners. Some of my students are also not proficient in Spanish. They often come with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack the confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking in both languages. Additionally, they are often intimidated by English. My goal is to show them all they can do in both languages.
My Project
Our guided reading book room has not been updated in more than 10 years. Many of the books we have are old and unattractive to our students. The majority of our books are fiction. In order to be used effectively by teachers, each set should have at least 4 books. Many of our books are missing or falling apart.
I have been tasked with improving our school book room.
However, the amount of money we have will not be enough to adequately restock all grade levels. Therefore I am doing this DonorsChoose project to help restock the nonfiction books that K-3 teachers need the most.
As a bilingual 3rd grade teacher, many of my students come in not yet reading in English. It is my job to move them from where ever they are to level P in English by the end of the year. Let's just say, that is an enormous challenge. In order to do my best to move students up, I need the right books. Because my students are coming in low, I need guided reading books at a K-1 level to start with. I use our book room for those books. However, I have trouble finding useful sets in the nonfiction topics that will best support my students. Please help me improve our book room so that I can do daily guided reading support with my most needy students.
