In our Kindergarten classroom, everyday begins with a hug! My students need a good hot breakfast and a hug from their teacher each morning so they can begin their academic day! I feel it is important to let my students know they are loved and cared for before I can begin to teach them!
I have 21 sweet Kinders in my Title 1 public school classroom!
We are a diverse class with many ethnic groups represented! There are varying levels of academic skills in this diverse classroom. Many of my students are English As A Second Language students. They have a very limited vocabulary which impedes their learning to read. I also have some students that are already reading and need books that will help them increase their vocabulary. My class is a diverse class of enthusiastic learners who love learning about the world around them.
We live in a resort/fishing town with lots of migration in the off tourist season. Our school is small with only 3 teachers per grade level. Our community is close and most everyone works in some type of trade to benefit the resort areas. We love school and are more than ready to begin our academic career!
My Project
Learning to read well with comprehension and fluency is difficult for most children. Many of my Kinders have language obstacles which make reading a problem. They need Leveled books, such as the Common Core sets to read with me in small groups while they are tracking the words with their fingers. This is the best way to reinforce all the skills that I will teach in my whole group session. This small group session will have fiction and non-fiction books. We need stories that deal with science topics such as alternate energies, the human body, the solar system and other topics. Not only will my students learn to read with comprehension and fluency they will be learning about the world around them.
I am requesting K Common Core Exemplar sets to make sure my students are exposed to all genres. These books will ensure my students are reading appropriate levels with adequate challenges and the literary depth required to master the new standards
Please help us with this Guiding Reading group for our classroom.
My students will use these books daily as they learn the skills and strategies necessary to become better readers. Please make this possible for my students.
"If you can read, you can do anything!" Becoming fluent readers will give my students the ability to do anything they can dream and read about!
