Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from low income families, and most of them come from families that do not speak English. When I think back to my elementary school days, I remember the amazing books I had an opportunity to read, and how much those books created a love of reading and learning in me.
Every child in my room has the desire to learn.
Now I want to give them the books to help them love to read and learn every day when they come to school.
My Project
Every day, each student gets a chance to come to Guided Reading. In Guided Reading, students get to read with me and a group of classmates who are reading at the same level they are. This is one of the best opportunities they have for becoming better readers.
But I don't want them to just have the ability to read, I want them to have a love of reading.
I want them eager to come to the Guided Reading table and read the next book, or the next chapter. I want them to have books that leave them hungry for more.
Having 5 copies of these books will allow students to read the same book at the same time, and be able to discuss the book with each other. This is so beneficial to their reading abilities, but also to their conversational abilities being that they are learning in a second language.
The books I've selected, such as Charlotte's Web, Ramona the Pest, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are books that I know will get my students excited to read every single day.
