Guided Reading Books for Students With Disabilities
My students need nonfiction guided reading books to use during our small group instruction!

My Students
Tom Wolfe once said, "Nonfiction is never going to die." Unfortunately, in our classroom with our outdated, piecemeal library, nonfiction has yet to be born.
The students in my class are all special education students.
They attend a public school in NY, but all have either learning disabilities or emotional issues. Being the only self-contained special education class in the entire elementary school can be quite challenging. We are always the "extra" class on the grade, and get the "leftover" material year after year.
My Project
To be able to have brand new nonfiction guided reading books would mean so much to my students. Being able to explore nonfiction in a small group setting would not only help them become better readers, but would also teach them about so many relevant, current topics. Currently, we have very outdated nonfiction books. We do not have multiple copies of any nonfiction titles, so doing guided reading with nonfiction is impossible.
You can make a difference in these special education students' lives by contributing to this project.
Your support can potentially expose these students to topics they never knew existed. You can help a future astronaut learn about rocket ships, or show a future doctor what our organs look like. or maybe expose the next MLB shortstop to the rules of baseball. Without being exposed to nonfiction titles, these students will never know what our world has to offer them.
