“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” – Margaret Fuller
My students come from low income households and they all receive free lunch.
My students need books to expand their knowledge, increase their vocabulary, and hopefully become lifelong readers.
Despite all the issues my students face, they always come to school prepared to learn, but are in need of classroom resources. They come to school each and every day eager to learn and anxious to delve into books they cannot access at home. It is my goal every day to make sure that books are getting into my students' hands. The more time children spend reading books, the better readers they become.
My students are intelligent and are always willing to learn new things. They love to read and believe that reading can take them as far as becoming future leaders.
My Project
One of the ways to improve students’ reading and comprehension skills is to make sure that they have access to books that are at their reading levels and instructional levels.
These books will help them grow as readers.
With the leveled readers, students will have access to books that are “just right”. Books that will build their confidence as readers and help improve their comprehension skills. My students will read books for 30 minutes daily during D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time. They will also practice reading for comprehension and fluency during guided reading time. When students practice from books that are too difficult or too easy, it does not help them grow.
I believe with the leveled readers in the classroom library, my students will have access to “just right” books that will allow them to read above and beyond their grade level. With these book in the library, reading will become fun and not frustrating!!
