My Students

Things have changed so much since I was in school. Now, instead of listening to my teacher scratch away on a chalk board and hunch over a textbook, my students get the opportunity to engage with hands-on materials and technology pieces that I never even dreamed of as a kid.

This year, I am so blessed as to have a class with some of the best self-control a teacher could ask for out of 9-year olds.

This is even more remarkable given their backgrounds. They are not only exceeding the expectations society has for them, they're coming close to meeting mine. I want to reward them for this by giving them some new resources to enjoy during our guided math block. They have proved they can sit quietly and work together quietly during the first half of the year...now it's time to shift gears and really let them fly (and have a little fun too)!

My Project

The resources I am requesting are enrichment games and math stations that will help me reinforce or review particularly challenging concepts for my children using problem solving. I'm also requesting a large group of playing cards because I have many games reinforcing math facts that need no additional supplies save for a deck of cards. Today's math is so different from yesterday's math, and students need to understand it on such a deeper level to be successful with it. I'm hopeful that the materials I have requested will help me reach them on that life-long mastery level. By giving them a chance to work with these games that are centered on making real-world choices and decisions, I'm confident they will be able to become more confident with their own math abilities and walk away from my class this year with a better and deeper understanding of the concepts they need to be successful later in life.

This project is so important because, in a lot of ways, my students have their futures cut out for them based on the societal influences they have to overcome.

How could I not continue to try and find new and challenging ways to help them take one of the most difficult subjects in school and, instead of fearing it, taking it by the horns and embracing it?
