My students need a variety of books/bibliotherapy options in which they can relate to. This can help build up the students' self-esteem and help validate their inner feelings.
As a new school counselor that will begin my teaching career in a K-8 this upcoming year. Because it is my first year I have no books and truly believe in the power and validation bibliotherapy can provide for students. I have spent this summer creating a variety of different guidance class lessons.
I will be working with all students K-8 from individual sessions, group counseling, and I plan on going into classrooms and implementing guidance lessons.
This is a dual immersion school. It is a title I school with half of the population on free or reduced lunch. This school is a career focused school that is attempting to shift its purpose and attempting to implement prevention interventions, which is where I come in.
My Project
I will begin my career at this school with no resources and over 600 students on my caseload. These resources could help me reach, connect and build rapport with my students. I would like them to feel like they could come into my office and talk to me when needed. If a student is having a bad day or may be needing a self-esteem booster for example, we could read a story, discuss it and hopefully give the student students tools that could help he/she restart there day.
Bibliotherapy is something that any child can understand when personal, social, and/or emotional issues may arise.
It is helpful for students to see characters (from books) going through similar situations and can help them relate to what they are going through.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
