Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This was the first year that my school has had a Guidance Counselor. I am building the Guidance Curriculum for next year, but it has been hard with a lack of resources. My students like to hear stories and see pictures to understand concepts. They would love these books to support the curriculum!

My students are some of the most spirited and compassionate students I have ever worked with.

We lack a great deal of resources but they still come to school ready to learn and work hard! They care deeply about each other and the community and do their best to make our school a positive learning environment, despite overcoming socioeconomic obstacles. They love to be read to and apply the story to the concepts we are learning to expand their knowledge on the subject.

My Project

I will be doing a classroom guidance topic each month with grades k-4, and these books will help enhance learning on the current topic. For example, when we discuss bullying, we will read the book One to help further their understanding of the topic and have illustrations as an aid as well. Books keep the lessons even more engaging for my students, which makes them more available to learn the material being taught. Social-emotional skills are extremely important for our elementary kids to not only learn but practice, practice and practice some more; by using these stories to provide examples of the subject they are learning, students will grasp a deeper understanding of the topic. The whole student population will also benefit from this library of books, because every class will be taught at least 6 of these lessons.

These donations will allow me to reach more students with my lessons.

The majority of my students love being read to, so as previously stated, they will be more engaged in the lessons. Also, our school has a focus on literacy, so this ties in our schools ELA goals with the Guidance Curriculum to not only bolster social-emotional skills and concepts but also literacy skills as well. I also hope these books aid in the development of my new curriculum for next year.
