Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your history classes? For many, the thought of history evokes dry lectures and textbook readings about chronology and irrelevant events. ("Bueller?") For my sixth graders, however, studying history means interviewing peers to create oral histories, conducting historical research to create museum exhibits, and crafting documentaries and TED Talks.
In my sixth grade history classroom, I try to bring ancient history to life through project-based learning, collaboration, and technology.
I teach 120 brilliant, resilient, and thoughtful students of color, many of whom are impacted by trauma. By teaching them to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, I hope to help them better understand historical inequities in order to fight for social justice.
My Project
My amazing sixth grade students have a wide range of interests. Some love to read about sports, others enjoy middle school drama, and quite a few are mad about manga! However, there are a group of students who just can’t seem to get excited about reading fiction titles. They much prefer to read about interesting facts and the world around them - animals, space, robots and more.
I want to target these scientifically-minded students and other potential science buffs with this book project.
My students already love the few books I have from the Who Would Win series, so I’ve added several more along with lots of books about animals! I’ve also added some books in the ever-popular graphic novel format to provide a gateway from the graphic novel to the nonfiction section of my library. I know that my students will be inspired by these fascinating titles, and who knows - maybe their interests will even lead them to future STEM careers!
