Growing with Plants

My students need books, models, growing crystals, clear viewing tanks, games, a stamp set, and seeds.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Karman's classroom raised $549

This project is fully funded

Our 800 low-income, urban (k-5) elementary students will enjoy the opportunity to take part in one of nature's miracles—the birth and growth of a plant. Learners will be provided with hands-on activities showing plant growth in action. Our children can plant, feed, control/vary temperature and light. They can observe and record the behavior of all types of plants under a controlled environment. Growing plants within our science classroom will enhance child awareness and understanding of the role that plants play in our environment. Our growing lab will provide a site where students, year after year can develop a sense of discovery with plants (grown with/out nutrients and with/out soil). Objectives: 1. Students will learn about physical changes that plants undergo from seeds to plants: to gain insight and develop investigative skills, as they research the world of plants. 2. Our children will be involved in collecting, identifying, classifying, graphing, and organizing information about their plant observations. 3. Each student will develop a sense of achievement as they invent the ideal plant for display, discussion, story writing, informative reports, math activities, and scientific experiments. I will expand upon my students' natural wonder of plant growth to excite and educate them with first-hand plant experience. My rotating schedule of elementary science classes will learn about plants using music, drama, poetry, creative writing, science experiments, and expository text. Each student will design their own plant, name, describe, and scientifically label it. Students will create a life-size version of their plant. They'll write its plant life history (factual and fictional). We will construct a simulated perfect garden on our 16' bulletin board. Our growing lab will assume no prior knowledge of the plant life cycle. A diversity of "correct" ideas will be encouraged from all students. My realistic, manageable, and understandable activities will meet the needs of our children. The open-ended assignments will allow students to participate at their own developmental stage. Students will become empowered to share what they come to know to educate others. Student conduct will improve as children develop better cooperative learning skills. They will share ideas, analyze facts, express support, and encourage one another as each child develops a sense of discovery within our hydroponics grow lab. Pictures will be taken of all activities within the ongoing project. Overall student knowledge about plants and their place in the environment will increase and be evidenced in their developed projects. I will share our school's plant book showing our school's adventure filled with photos of our students' plantings, graphing, charting, presentation of each plant design/history. With your help, our students will grow seeds in poly-crystal medium which allow observation of the root system development in our clear-view teaching tank. The Carnivorous and Tickle Me seeds will grow into interesting plants for learner observation. The books and models will reinforce every student's scientific understanding about a plant's life cycle and growth. Our children will write about their experiences using stamps as aids to construct a school-wide book sharing what's been learned. Our Garden-opoly game will grow on students as they learn interesting facts such as the appropriate climate, soil, and watering for each plant--as well as its origin and plant varieties. Through your donations, our happy and challenging Grow With Plants project can help students gain real-life plant development experiences. Our plant lab will offer an opportunity where students can learn real-life experiences with our happy, challenging planting project. Their minds will be turned onto critical thinking using expository text and manipulative experimentation which can only evidence academic gains. Thank you kindly for your donation!
