I am a school social worker for students grades K-8. My students are curious, innovative, and brilliant. Our school is located on the west side of Chicago where there is a lack of resources to address the violence in the community and the trauma that comes with it. Their resilience and strength are admirable, and I feel so fortunate to learn from them every day.
My Project
Playing is a powerful tool that can be used to create authentic opportunities for kids to learn about themselves and the world around them. Everyday games such as Operation, Yahtzee, and Memory can be creatively used to help kids develop social skills, coping skills, and learn strategies for self-regulation.
While playing these games, my students will learn more about who they are as people and develop life skills.
After sessions of gameplay, we will strategically debrief. We will discuss how what they experienced through playing can help them in the "real world," and their personal lives.
