My Students

My students need to know that they are not alone! The stories captured in Anne Frank's Diary and the novel, Stotan! by Chris Crutcher will reassure them that they are part of the human experience, that they are unique yet sharing the wonders and hardships that the world has to offer.

Living in Hawaii has its perks: beautiful views, gorgeous weather, and plenty of recreational activities.

However, it is shocking how few experiences my students have beyond their own community. Few of them have been off the island, and even fewer have been to the mainland United States. Almost none of them have been to another country. This lack of breadth in exposure, not to mention the high incidence of poverty in the community in which I teach, causes them to miss out on so much. The ramifications of their closed-off lives include much smaller vocabularies, no point of reference for global issues, and a near-complete absence of complex, independent thought. In addition, education at this school tends to encourage complacent thinking and doing what you are told without question. They need to question!

My Project

Middle school students are resilient, but every day is different and a little scary. They are faced with choices and challenges that shape their characters. Anne Frank presents an unfamiliar and powerful experience that will open my 7th graders' minds and hearts to the struggles of people their age from a vastly different part of the world. I plan to pair the diary with the Italian film Life Is Beautiful to give them a closer look at what happened in the labor camps and at the lengths to which a person will go to protect his family. The second novel Stotan! offers my 8th graders a closer-to-home situation about swimmers that have to overcome their doubts about themselves to develop the deep well of strength and courage inherent in us all. Having grown up on an island, my students are natural-born swimmers; they will relate to the characters and be able to look inside themselves for that same strength and courage. We will watch Coach Carter to reinforce the theme through film.

Remember how you felt in middle school?

Everyone at that age needs to remember the power that they have within themselves to make a difference and survive, to face down any struggle and be courageous when confronted with adversity. Everyone has that power, but I see that many of my students forget that they do. Both Anne Frank and the characters of Stotan! give hope to those who may have forgotten their strength. By their examples my students will learn to develop characters of true resilience.
