My Project
I am a school nurse but have a passion for gardening. At the end of last year, I decided to use some planters the school had to plant some vegetables and flowers to see if there was any interest in a potential club. Boy, was I surprised. I had students arguing over who was going to help get those planters ready. Once we started other students came over to see what we were doing.
We planted a few vegetables and some flowers, and the students were always watching the growth and arguing over who would get the first pepper that popped up.
I was stopped in the hall daily to ask if they could help water the plants. I knew I had the interest but not the room. With the support of my principal and the help of community volunteers, we transformed a small patch near the recessed area into a garden plot right before Christmas.
If the project is fully funded, I will have the supplies needed to grow lettuce and vegetables in our hydroponic system. I would start the project with the help of the 4H students but would recruit other students interested in growing, harvesting, and offering our bounty to their fellow students at a lunchtime snacking table.
