This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school counselor serving a student population of approximately 190 students in Harlem.

My students come from diverse multicultural and multilingual backgrounds, but most of them come from low-income households.

I love working with my school community because I feel that I am in the right place and I make my vocation: to provide help to those who need it most.

Each brings their uniqueness to make not only my counseling sessions shine, but my school community as well.

My Project

I want to help my students strengthen their social and emotional development through the magical world of reading.

Through reading, my students learn to express and understand their emotions.

It also opens doors to ways to deal with emotional responses, gain personal growth, change behaviors, and develop self-confidence and self-esteem.

The purpose of this project is to make available to my students a variety of books that we can use in our counseling spaces or that they can read when they come to my office for guidance or help. To be able to offer my students books that they feel connected to, that empower them, help them find relief from their daily struggles. Stories in which they can see themselves and can reflect on their values and abilities and thus learn to value themselves more.

I will incorporate elements such as discussions, reflections, presentations, role play, journal writing, and poster creation to make this project a wonderful resource to my counseling program.
