Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our urban school, many students have limited access to green spaces or firsthand experiences with nature. I want to bring the science of plants to life right in our classroom with an AeroGarden hydroponics system. This project will transform a small corner of our room into a vibrant lab where students can witness and investigate plant growth in real time—without soil, without sun, but full of science!
The Project:
With an AeroGarden, students will be able to grow herbs, lettuce, and even small vegetables using only water, nutrients, and LED light. This technology-rich, clean, and compact system will allow us to explore essential science topics including:
Plant life cycles and photosynthesis
Ecosystems and sustainability
Food production and nutrition
Engineering design and technology in agriculture
We’ll use the data we collect from the garden—growth rate, water use, nutrient impact—to drive scientific inquiry and lab reports. Students will design experiments, make predictions, and record observations like real scientists.
Why It Matters:
This project isn't just about growing plants—it's about growing minds. In an urban setting where nature can feel distant, this experience brings biology to life. It fosters responsibility, curiosity, and critical thinking. It also shows students that science isn’t confined to textbooks—it’s alive, it’s relevant, and it’s in their hands.
