Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I strive for a sense of love and family in my room. Students are exposed to historical and social justice stories through the use of books and art. Self love, love for the ancestors and community is what I strive to create in the hearts and minds of students while balancing academic content.

My students are majority students of color from East Oakland.

The Roses in Concrete Community School is a K-8 school in East Oakland functioning as a center of health within the neighborhoods surrounding it, providing wrap-around services in education, health, housing, and job training. The long-term goal is to create a model for urban education that prioritizes the needs of youth and families as the pathway to building healthy and sustainable communities across the U.S. and around the world. The name of the Roses in Concrete Community School was inspired by the book of poetry based on the writings of Tupac Shakur released in 1999, The Rose That Grew from Concrete. This vivid image captures the need to celebrate the tenacity and will of the rose that against-all-odds, finds a way to grow in the inhospitable and toxic environment of the concrete that it might transform the concrete into a rose garden.

My Project

Light tables can be used for literacy, math, music, writing, and science. By creating an inviting learning space, children will be encouraged to engage in learning activities through play. Light tables are an excellent source of visual sensory input. Children are naturally drawn to the glow of the table and are often calmed by the visual stimulation as they explore. Puzzles will help with physical skills -- from holding puzzle pieces and turning them until they fit; cognitive skills -- as they solve the problems of a puzzle; emotional skills -- they learn patience as they complete the puzzle. Dot paints will help students gain confidence in painting because they are fun and easy to use with minimal cleaning. A display book shelf will allow my students easy visual access to books about current learning content. Science droppers and tweezes will be used to carry out experiments.

Due to the opening costs of our new school, our budget is limited.

I have worked hard to be creative with minimal resources, but in reality, our warrior scholars deserve much more. The odds are against them, but as a school community we are ensuring that they succeed. Your donation will help 45 Kindergarteners this year and countless more in the future. A light table, display shelf, science and art materials will last for years to come and will help my students enhance their learning.
