Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember feeling confident and comfortable reading aloud in front of your peers? In order for my students to develop this confidence they need meaningful opportunities to practice.

My classroom is full of vibrant eight and nine year old students, with diverse needs and strengths.

My students also have diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, which we explore and celebrate throughout the year. We have a growth mindset learning community, and know that hard work results in achievement and that everybody is capable of achieving their goals. The best part of this project is that the resources are leveled, which means there is that is a "just right" text for all students. From struggling readers to advanced readers, all students will have the opportunity to engage in meaning reading activities with these resources.

My Project

These resources will be a part of our independent literacy practice. Each week students will read and build strong comprehension skills, as they read current and relevant articles in the Scholastic Magazines. The readers theater scripts will be a part of our "fluency center" and students will practice "accurate reading" and "reading with expression" with partners and in small groups. Once groups are ready to perform, they can film their "play" with my iPad. Students will then have the opportunity to give feedback and reflect on their performance, as they think about how to grow and improve.

Research shows that choice leads to increased motivation and effort.

(Gambrell, 2011) This project will provide more opportunities for choice and promote collaborative learning as students will work in groups and provide feedback to their peers. With practice, they will become confident readers, listeners, and speakers.
