Due to the physical, emotional and social needs of our students, providing flexible seating and social emotional tools is crucial in my self-contained classroom. I would love to continue growing our calm corner tools. I put a lot of work into my calm corner because my students love utilizing the space and spending time in it throughout the school day.
My upper elementary students with disabilities benefit from mindfulness and social emotional tools and strategies.
The tools such as weighted stuffed animals and fidget toys will help meet the social emotional needs of my students with disabilities. They help encourage the use of breathing techniques and calming strategies during moments of need. My students are always gravitating towards my calm corner where they find various tools to practice mindfulness with.
The flexible seating and calming tools provide a serene environment where my students can grow and flourish! The flexible seating fosters a comfortable, trusting and engaging learning environment. My students love the bean bags and cushion seats, especially, when it comes to independent reading in the library or calm corner! We set up a system where each student gets an opportunity to sit on the bean bag and cushion chair once a week.
