My Students

Do you remember your history classes? For many, the thought of history evokes dry lectures and textbook readings about chronology and irrelevant events. ("Bueller?") For my sixth graders, however, studying history means interviewing peers to create oral histories, conducting historical research to create museum exhibits, and crafting documentaries and TED Talks.

In my sixth grade history classroom, I try to bring ancient history to life through project-based learning, collaboration, and technology.

I teach one hundred and twenty, brilliant, resilient, and thoughtful students of color, many of whom are impacted by trauma. By teaching them to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, I hope to help them better understand historical inequities in order to fight for social justice.

My Project

This school year has been quite different from the norm. After a year online, my students have returned to the classroom for the first time since 4th grade. They are wearing masks and being tested regularly, and are experiencing a very different type of school environment than before. With all these differences, it has been reassuring to see that one thing has not changed - their deep and abiding love for graphic novels!

The graphic novel section is the most highly-trafficked section of our library, and I check out between 5-10 new titles daily!

While I'm so happy to see my students devouring these books, I also want to ensure that this section of my library accurately represents the student population of my school, with a wide range of experiences that can serve as windows and mirrors for students of different identities.

In this wishlist of amazing new graphic novels, I have included books ranging from superhero narratives to middle school dramas, from historical fiction to biographies of influential activists. I hope that by adding these books to my classroom library, I can encourage students to branch out from their tried-and-true favorites and discover a love for new genres and titles!
