it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love discovering and creating new ways to engage my students! I teach in a Title I school where there is a high population of foster kids and English Language Learners. Our school is located in a high poverty area in Los Angeles, California.
My students are eager, enthusiastic learners!
They find joy in our learning and push to have a growth mindset through struggles as we dive into new material within our reader's workshop, writer's workshop, math workshop or projects! I strive to create an engaging experience each day where I connect with the students, give them something new to think on, or see that they have made a new discovery in their learning. Together, we are on a journey as a community, growing through our everyday learning experiences.
My Project
"I don't know what to read!" Students come into my room stating this at the beginning of the year. They have either an enjoyment of reading, tolerate it, or absolutely hate reading. Students aren't used to having a choice in reading or feel that there is no book that suits them.
My goal as an educator is to foster a lifelong love of reading for all students that walk through my door!
By offering students choice in reading, this mentality to reading begins to shift to loving books! By having multiple choices in genres and types of books, students will not only feel like they have choice but feel empowered to choose a book that works for them. There truly is no such thing as a non reader; that child just has not found the right book yet!
By incorporating a variety of graphic novels and series, I can help students connect with a genre or series that fits their reading desires. You will see I have a variety of graphic novels! Not only are these books superb choices for readers, but they are great entry books for English Language Learners. Students feel less intimidated by graphic novels but still experience the high level content and story of a chapter book. Through the chapter books I have chosen, I can guarantee that a student who gets hooked on a book will have many books to read from following that first book choice. Once students are hooked, we will engage in book talks, book clubs, and discussions around the books we are reading.
Through these fantastic books, my students and my future students will have a just right book for them! They will truly become lifelong readers!
