Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse group of inner city students at a Title 1 school in Grades K-8. All of our students are eligible for free lunch. Many families are struggling financially with families living in overcrowded homes and there are some who are homeless.
The garden will help support the very large range of students from those higher learners, who need that extra challenge, to those who have special needs to those who are learning English.
Our students are eager to learn and are grateful for the opportunities they are provided. They seem to thrive with project-based learning.
My Project
We need soil and tools to revitalize our garden to help beautify our campus and to incorporate into our science curriculum ( K-8).
The garden will be used for farm to table activities, nutrition, science/ math curriculum and environmental awareness.
Students will have an opportunity to work on real-world problems and be exposed to engineering design principles. This helps abstract issues become more concrete and accessible to all, but especially the lower learners and English learners. It will also hopefully lead to healthy eating habits.
Students will learn what plants are best adapted to our environment and how to create a drought tolerant landscape that is well suited for our semi-desert climate.
